Amanda McMullen, President & CEO, New Bedford Whaling Museum

Our April speaker was Amanda McMullen, President & CEO of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Her presentation offered a compelling look at the museum’s history, mission, and future direction. The organization—formally known as The Dartmouth Historical Society—has broadened its educational focus well beyond traditional maritime history.

Members were especially intrigued to learn how the museum interprets cultural education through music, food, art, and hands‑on experiences, including explorable replicas such as a life‑sized whale heart. The talk sparked a lively and wide‑ranging Q&A, reflecting strong interest in the museum’s evolving role as a cultural and community resource.

Our March luncheon featured Dr. Sarah Ahern, Superintendent of Barnstable Public Schools, who delivered an engaging and thoughtful presentation on the district’s evolving approach to student learning.

Dr. Ahern highlighted how Barnstable students are being supported not only in the essential foundations of literacy and numeracy, but also in developing the broader skills that help them thrive—creative thinking, confidence‑building, and a strong sense of self‑esteem. Her remarks underscored the district’s commitment to preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

She also expressed Barnstable High School’s deep appreciation for its long‑standing partnership with the Osterville Men’s Club, noting the meaningful impact of the annual scholarships funded by OMC members. This continued support, she emphasized, plays a vital role in helping students pursue their goals beyond high school.

Mrs. Ruth French Accepts OMC Distinguished Member of Honor Award

At the Osterville Men’s Club luncheon meeting on January 7, 2026, Mrs. Ruth French accepted the OMC Distinguished Member of Honor Award on behalf of her late husband, Mr. George E. French.

The award was presented by Mr. Peter Holcombe, Chair of the Awards Committee, along with OMC President Mr. Paul Kruzel. The recognition honors Mr. French’s lasting contributions and dedicated service to the Club.

Professor Michael Czech, Ph.D., OMC Speaker, February, 2026

Professor Michael Czech, Ph.D., UMass Chan Medical School

Our February speaker was Professor Michael Czech who gave a lecture entitled, “How UMass Medical School Helped Reinvent The Business of Biomedicine.” In his talk, Professor Czech shared his philosophy on recruiting the best scientific faculty, independent of their area of biological research. Through the leadership of Professor Czech and his colleagues, UMass Chan Medical School has grown to become one of the top public medical schools in the US, recognized by the award of two Nobel Laureates while the combined work of the school has enabled discovery of new medicines. UMass Chan Medical School has a turnover of >$1B and is a significant employer in Massachusetts.
